Britain’s Oldest Mother Returns To Work

Posted by admin on July 1st, 2009

Elizabeth Adeney, 66, Britain’s oldest mother has returned work just four weeks after giving birth. The child has been left with a live-in nanny.

The child was born after Elizabeth Adeney,  managing director of a plastics company,  received IVF treatment in a Ukaine clinic. Policy in the UK is to refuse treatment to women over the age of 50

A few interesting facts: Mrs Adeney is now old enough to draw her state pension; when her son reaches his teens his mother will be in her 80’s! The child has been named Jolon, which translates into ‘young at heart!’

The birth was by caesarean at Cambridge’s Addenbrooke’s Hostipal. Her son was named Jolyon – which apparently translates into ‘young at heart’.

Returning to work after only one month Mrs. Adeney is also flying in the face of conventional medical advice which advises that new mothers should take at least three months off work.

The baby was born by caesarean at Cambridge’s Addenbrooke’s Hospital. Mrs Adeney returned to her £600,000 detached home near Newmarket, Cambridgeshire, with her son six days later.

Mrs. Adeney decision to return to work so soon defies the usual medical advice to take at least three months off after giving birth, and experts said her caesarean scars would not yet fully healed.

She was working up to five days a week at the company she owns Delmore Ltd, right up until the birth.

Before his birth Mrs Adeney was reluctant to discuss her pregnancy but defended her decision to have IVF, saying: ‘It doesn’t interest me that I’m going to be the oldest mum in the country.

‘It’s not physical age that is important – it’s how I feel inside. Some days I feel 39. Others, I feel 56.’

  1. I don’t see it as being a big deal that she’s gone back to work for a couple of hours per day. She’s not neglecting the baby. This seems like rather a non-story to me. It’s a bit different when you own the company. She still has to run it, even if she is now a mother.
