Symptoms of Colic

As a new parent it can be disorienting, confusing and a little frightening when you see your baby crying all the time. Just as much as parents need sleep, newborns do too. It’s difficult when your baby can only sleep for short periods at a time because the pain in their tummy wakes them.

If you aren’t sure what is happening with your infant, there are some warning signs that indicate that he or she may be suffering with colic

Crying for long periods of time. A baby won’t cry incessantly unless something is wrong. If your newborn cries without stopping or cries a lot over a period of a few days and nothing seems wrong, there’s a good chance it’s colic.

Redness in the face. Most babies will turn a slight shade of red when they’re crying and that’s no different with babies with colic. If your baby’s face seems to be red quite a bit of the time, colic may be the culprit.

Excessive gas. You can usually tell whether or not your baby’s fussiness is colic related by how much gas they have. In addition to hearing the baby passing gas you may notice he or she will pull their little legs up close to their body. This is their silent way of telling you they have too much gas.
